# Checking Status

> Follow an investment from payment to units by reading the payment and transaction endpoints.

We don't send notifications yet. You see where an investment stands by reading it.

## From payment to units

**1. You invest**

[`invest`](https://docs.ndovu.co/investing) returns a Payment with `status: PENDING` and a `reference`.

**2. The money arrives**

The Payment becomes `COMPLETED` and gets a `transactionId`. A Transaction now exists with `status: RECONCILED`. If the money never arrives, the Payment becomes `FAILED` and there is no Transaction.

**3. Ndovu invests it**

The Transaction becomes `COMPLETED` with its `units`, and the holding in the [portfolio](https://docs.ndovu.co/portfolio-and-transactions.md#portfolio) shows them.

## How often to check

| Situation | Suggested interval |
| - | - |
| M-Pesa prompt just sent | Every 5 seconds for 2 minutes, then every minute for 10 minutes |
| Bank transfer waiting for money | Every hour (transfers take hours to a business day to arrive) |
| Transaction `RECONCILED` | A few times a day (investing takes one to two business days) |

Stop checking a Payment once it's `COMPLETED` or `FAILED`, and a Transaction once it's `COMPLETED` or `ARCHIVED`: they don't change after that.

Every check counts towards your [rate limit](https://docs.ndovu.co/errors.md#rate-limits) of 300 requests per minute. To follow many customers, list each customer's pending payments rather than reading every payment one by one.
